Why the birdcage is engineering, not carpentry
A pool enclosure looks like screen and feels like shade, but structurally it is a lightweight aluminum frame designed to survive the same wind events as the house beside it. The Florida Building Code sets the wind loads; the engineering translates them into member sizes, spans, and anchor schedules; the permit and inspection verify it happened. Every part of that chain exists because enclosures that skip it become projectiles.
That is the honest reason enclosure work belongs with licensed contractors, and it is also the honest way to read a cheap bid. Aluminum prices are what they are — a quote dramatically under the others is usually missing engineering, permit, or gauge, and all three are invisible until the first tropical-season squall finds them.
New cages, rescreens, and the line between
New enclosure projects are mostly decided by three choices: mesh (standard 18/14 versus no-see-um weave), geometry (mansard, gable, or dome roof, and where the doors land), and how the structure meets the house — gutter integration is where water problems start when it is done casually.
Repair splits cleanly in two. Screen panels and spline are consumables; Florida UV retires them in about a decade, storms sooner, and rescreening is quick, satisfying work. The frame is not a consumable. Bent uprights, racked geometry, or anchors pulled from the deck mean the structure needs assessment — and until it gets one, a damaged cage is a keep-out zone, not a weekend project.
